Japanese Needles for
Metal Thread Embroidery

Japanese needles are made in an older traditional fashion with bored round eyes instead of stamped elongated oval eyes. Modern stamped needles have burrs in the eye left from the processing which can catch on metal threads and shread them. The large round hole for the Japanese needle makes them very easy to thread. The two sizes I am offering here are the #9 and #7 (shown against a #26 tapestry needle for comparison).

I use the #9 Japanese needle for most gold passing threads such as #371 gold wyre, #5 or #4 gilt smooth pasing on silk. The #7 is a good size for Gilt Special Tambour, 9 drm Gilt Tambour, and Gilt Sylke Twist.

The needles are not nickel plated and therefore can rust easily. They need to be kept in a Japanese needle felt when not stitching to protect them and your linen from rust. The natural lanolin in the needle felt will keep it oiled. If for some reason your needle does get a rust mark on it, sand it with #800-#1600 grit sandpaper.

I sell the needles only with a needle felt to protect the needle. If you want both needles, you have the option of buying them with only one needle felt.

These needles are rare and should be thought of as a speciality tool, not a disposable needle. They are made by one of the last needle artisans in the world in Japan.
