Rose Circle Pin

Berlin Wool Work that was popular in the Victorian Era inspired this lovely rose circle pin. Berlin Wool Work was characterized by the mass-market charted patterns that were produced using hand-colored graph paper. The introduction of these canvas-work designs popularized simple Tent Stitch or Cross Stitch embroidery to the newly emerging middle-class women. Flowers and animals were some of the most frequently found motifs, along with portraits of the Royal Family and Biblical themes.

Snowflake Pin

I was inspired by the many beautiful motifs I had observed on German folk embroideries while traveling through Switzerland, Germany and Austria. These embroideries were mainly monochromatic, in either red or blue, and stitched on coarsely hand-woven linen. In many regions, these motifs covered curtains, table clothes and wall hangings. On my travels, I have been known to eat in a certain restaurant for the opportunity to sit there with my graph paper and copy motifs from the tables and walls.

Thistle Pin

I have always loved thistles for their unique spiky texture and rich purple color. I found a wonderful woodcut drawing of a thistle and thought an adaptation of it would make a charming pin. Often in the 16th and 17th centuries, woodcut prints would serve as the inspiration for popular Tent Stitch pictures. In fact, most tent stitch pictures, such as those found in the Burrell Collection, can be traced to the woodcut print upon which they were based. These tent stitch pieces mainly showed Biblical stories with the characters dressed in modern style.

Pumpkin Pin

The inspiration for this fall design was a spot motif from a 17th century sampler in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England. I was amused by the inclusion of a pumpkin wrapped in knotwork of heavy gold thread. I imagined that the little girl who worked the piece must have placed the pumpkin there while working on her sampler for the fall. I have designed a new knotwork and pumpkin to honor her sense of humor.
